Understanding the Question

The prompt will look something like this:

“How does the writer use language here to...?”

You’ll be directed to a specific section of the source and asked to comment on how the writer achieves a certain effect. This is not about analysing structure or form—your focus must remain on language only.

How to Approach It

Use the PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation) method to build your paragraphs. Aim for two to three clear points, backed by precise quotations and detailed analysis. Focus on word choice, figurative language (similes, metaphors), sentence types, and imagery.

Example Paragraph

Let’s imagine the extract describes a stormy sea:

“The waves crashed against the rocks like furious beasts, roaring with relentless rage.”

The writer uses a simile—“like furious beasts”—to personify the waves and suggest their untamed power. The word “furious” connotes anger and aggression, which creates a threatening atmosphere. The verb “crashed” reinforces the violence of the sea, while “roaring” adds a sense of danger and chaos. This language helps the reader visualise the sea as alive and dangerous, building tension in the scene.

Final Tips

  • Stay focused on language: Avoid analysing structure or commenting on the writer’s intentions too broadly.

  • Zoom in on words: Analyse connotations and the effect of specific vocabulary.

  • Be concise but analytical: Two strong points are better than three rushed ones.
